For any student, most of his childhood and his waking hours
are spent in the midst of his schoolmates, in school. The school is a focal
point of all activities in his childhood and therefore a school has a
responsibility to its students to provide a perfect environment for over-all
development. In a small idyllic corner of Durgapur, lies a school in the midst
of a grove of trees - St. Xavier’s School, Durgapur. For a period of eleven
years, the teachers and staff impart their knowledge and values to the students
who are then set free to chart their own paths, and to rule the world !
Students
join a school in the quest for knowledge and an attempt to prove their true
mettle. Our school has always maintained high standards of teaching and the
students have reciprocated and brought about some of the best ICSE results of
Durgapur and sometimes even in Eastern India. Apart from this, our students have
also excelled in other examinations such as the National Talent Search
Examination or the Olympiads.
The school believes in a four house system with each class of students evenly
distributed among the houses when they join the school. For the rest of their
school life, they compete in any intra-school event under the banner of their
house and try to bring laurels to their respective houses. At the end of each
year, the house with the maximum number of points is judged the best house of
the year. There are four houses: Loyola, Xavier, Gandhi, and Tagore. The
competition between them is fierce and has lead to better contests and improved
skills.

Our
school has firmly believed that “All Work and no Play makes Jack a dull boy”.
Thus there are ample facilities for sports with a huge playground, a gymnasium,
a table tennis room, etc. Every year, around June or July we have an Inter
School Football tournament and each match is watched avidly and discussed later
with great interest. The matches with St. Michaels School, Durgapur, virtually
resemble an India Pakistan cricket match with both schools fighting hard within
the spirit of the game to wrest a victory from the other.
These matches are watched not only by students but also by teachers and
ex-students, many of whom recall their halcyon days on coming back. We also have
a Sport’s day every year where athleticism and determination is shown by all
winners in the various races / events.
Xaverians take pride in succeeding in every stream of life and
it is not a different story in extra curricular activities. Be
it in quizzes, debates, essay writing or the arts, Xaverians have
made their mark in each stream, including achievements such as
reaching the finals of the Bournavita Quiz Competition, winning
the Inter ICSE debate and essay writing competitions, etc. The
school also holds numerous intra school competitions between the
various houses with attractive prizes for the winners.
